Motocross lessions?

New postby Barrett » Mon May 3, 2010, 1:11 pm

I'm a real dirt bike rider when it comes to trails, been doing it since I was 8. But I really suck at MX tracks, the jumps mainly. I wish I was better at it because it seems like a ton of fun and much cheaper than a road track day. Part of it might be that my dirt bike is a 89' YZ250 which just feels like it's trying to kill me. But I can't justify a new dirt bike until I do it more.

I think I'm going to look in to getting some lesions, any suggestions?

Thanks!

Haha thanks.

Yea I got a lession sunday when I fish tailed all the way up a jump face and face planted the landing, got up and did a few more laps then came back to the car where my friend asked me what my name was a what day it was... I didn't for a half hour or so. Got a nice concusion apparently. I remember the crash but not the laps I did after or the 30 mins after that or so.

There is a motorcross track/training facility in the west valley that has lessons. They post on craigslist, but haven't seen the ads in a while. Maybe do a google search. There's also a supermoto track down in SD that does track days dirt/street for $199 including the bike and instruction.

I did a Rick Johnson School back in like '01 or '02 at Lake Elsinore. It was a 1 day program and well worth it imo. He would be that second link I posted. Ryan Hughes has some kinda of program too - both those guys are/were top line AMA Pro mx racers for many many years.

hth :)

I've been slowly teaching myself mx, which is hard since I started riding street bikes less then 4 years ago and that was my only 2 wheeled experience. I find hooking up with someone at the track who can tow you around it a wise idea. My roomie helped me greatly and I appreciated all he did, but there is a time when you've gotta cut the umbilical and since then, I've been having a blast. I'm not good, far from it, but I've crashed enough to have learned my lessons and I think if you can ride trails, a few days on the mx course learning how to jump with some help from a sideliner, shouldn't be too much of a problem. I see first time track riders all the time at milestone. Its a hoot watching the trail riders because most of them have big bikes and do silly things like flip them over!! LOL I think a 250 2t is fine, Its a lot of bike, but you've just gotta get use to it. I have a kx125 and I've spent a great deal of time and money making it work for me and I love it.

Anyhow, there are a few schools, but I recommend one on one training at the track. It might cost more, but if you take a day off from work and hit up milestone when its quiet, you should learn a lot in a day. I did a google search to find teachers and dug through links upon links, there are tuns of them in so cal, just search and yee shall find!

Good luck! MX is fun, cheap and believe it or not safer then trails!

That Rick Johnson link is old, I guess he is racing off-road trucks and not messin' with schools anymore. Or, wait I think he is one of the owners at Perris MX track. Maybe they have something there?
Let me check.

Ya from: http://www.perrisraceway.com/about.html

Perris has really good dirt too. :) HTH

Though that might be last years dates. :haha: Call 'em up and find out.

You don't need motocross lessons to ride fast on a motocross track.
You do need practice, practice and more practice.

Being in top physical condition will help you more than anything.
If you are serious about wanting to be a good motocrosser you need good gear starting with your bike.
Get an '02 or newer 250 TWO STROKE. ($2000 or less) and make sure you have good riding gear.

Then train, train, train. bicycling, running and swimming are all great ways to train. Weights are great for explosive strength. Mountian biking is especially good for developing fast twitch muscles. The stronger you are physically, the better you will handle bad landings, mistakes on whoops and bad launches off doubles.

It takes a long time to become comfortable launching a motorcycle over doubles/tripples but it becomes second nature once you dial it in.
I love motocross. It kept me strong for most of my life.
I say do it. You just have to commit and follow through. The rewards are awesome.
